Hi there, today I want to talk a bit about focus or lack thereof. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably got a ton of projects going at the same time. The problem with having a lot of projects at the same time, Is that it gets more difficult to finish any one of them. As a result, you need to find a way to regain focus without losing the creative spirit. It’s all about getting the job done while still having fun.
Loss Of Focus
Loss of focus usually happens if you have more than one project open at any given time. What usually happens to me is that I get an idea, then I start working on the idea, then I get an even better idea and start working on that. Now it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what happens next, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what’s the usual result of my projects.
I have a lot of half finished products lying around on my computer!
So, it still happens, but I have to say that I’ve found a couple of ways to harness my creativity in a way that allows me to actually finish some of my projects. Having said that I’d do still have a tendency to drift. I’ve learned to live with that though, and I try to get the most out of it.
So, let’s talk a bit about what you can do to control your creativity.
Controlling Your Creativity
We want to control our creativity, without extinguishing it. At least for me, creativity is the main source of my income. So, if creativity is such an important part of my livelihood, I want to make sure that I don’t smother it.
What you want to do is aim all that creativity towards a very specific goal. One of the ways to do that is to use mind maps like, we’ve talked about earlier on NetScribePro. Now I can’t speak too highly of mind maps. I tell you I love using mind maps. They are an excellent way to focus your creativity. However, if you don’t like using mind maps don’t, find some other way to harness your creativity. Just make sure that you find a method that works for you and allows you to control your creativity.
Re-Focusing Your Efforts
Using mind maps isn’t the only thing I’ve done to refocus my creativity. Now I know better than to try to limit myself to one project that simply isn’t going to work.
My passion is writing, and I’m a software developer by trade. I’m telling you that because that means I get a lot of different ideas for products and projects.
So instead of limiting myself to one project I’ve limited myself to one project of each type. Therefore, at any given time I can work on these different types of projects, but I can’t work on any more than one project of each type. The project types I allow myself to work on are:
1: software projects
2: website projects, including blogs
3: reports or e-books
4: articles or blog posts.
So as you can see I’m giving myself a lot of different options, but the rule is that once I’ve started a project of the given type. I have to finish it before starting another project of the same type.
Getting The Job Done
I do that, because without finishing any of my projects, I’m not, make any money. And if I don’t make any money off my projects well then I’m going to have to figure out what else to do. You see these projects are the key to making a living online.
Your projects on my case my projects are the key to independence, financially and otherwise. If you don’t manage to finish any of them, then you won’t gain that the independence.
